I get this question asked more frequently these days. I usually tell people, if you have nothing to lose and you don't care about the choice, quantity and quality of care you may need then don't worry about it. People then think twice about it, as none want to be told they can't have what they want. I checked into what is on the internet about it and WikiAnswers says: Insurance is a little like gambling. You're taking action based on the odds something might or might not happen. You might pay insurance premiums for years and never need it. Then again, you may fall off a roof and need $57,000 worth of specialized medical care. If you have that kind of money lying around, you might not need insurance too badly. If you're like the rest of us, you'll take a $500 deductible payment over the total cost of a hospital bill any day. |
Not the best answer, but not far off from the concept of shifting the risk to the insurance company and away from your own personal finances.
