No doubt BCBS has had more than it's share of insuring the most unhealthy groups and individuals in MI. In return, it has not paid taxes in MI for 30 years. That would have been fine except the health insurance plans BCBS currently offers individuals are inherently unhealthy due to limited benefits, for the people who need them the most and often have no other options. Individual insurance is currently age banded by BCBS and it gets very expensive for people age 61-64 which doesn't seem fair since the only reason they are buying it is because they have no other options. It is beyond time for this fiscal relationship to be overhauled and I applaud Gov. Snyder for approaching this matter.
I believe this is a start to addressing the issues and putting all the carriers on a similar playing field. It will take more than encouragement from our govenor to put together affordable and adequate benefits for individuals with health issues. Our hope is that the rates our members pay for the health insurance purchased for their empolyees stabilizes as a result of this agreement.
